Ulpan Kibbutz Shoval is an aliyah programme for university graduates under 28 especially tailored for young people to help them further their academic studies and professional integration in Israel. It is not easy for a young to integrate within a new society, either professionally or socially. The process of integration and absorption involves many aspects, including Israeli specifics for a particular profession, but 1st and foremost, acquiring the Hebrew language on an academic level which permits one to further study for the 2nd and 3rd degree and to integrate in a specific professional field. Young people who make aliyah alone without any family support’ can easily get lost in such situations, despite a significant academic and professional knowledge. The programme supports young specialists and gives them an opportunity to acquire Hebrew at a university level leading to their professional integration, without the obvious concern of earning their everyday living during their 1st year in Israel, which is so crucial. Young university graduates who meet the criteria and pass an interview, arrive at Kibbutz Shoval and stay there for 10 months, from November through to September, during which period they study Hebrew for 40 hours per week and sometimes even more, and the remainder of their time is spent working within the Kibbutz framework. A lot of time and effort is devoted to get them acquainted with universities and professional fields, so that by the end of the programme participants leave the Kibbutz with sufficient Hebrew and a clear idea of how and where they continue their studies or start their professional career. Shoval is the best JAFI programme for new immigrant university graduates which exists for more than 14 years and is financed from the core of the JAFI budget.
